"Dubai roads" Adopts additional front panel for delivery bikes

Dubai, December 15 / WAM / The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai announced the approval of issuing an additional front plate for motorcycles and electric bicycles for the business of delivering orders to companies, after it was limited to a rear plate only, as of the end of this month of December. It will be added gradually upon renewal of the license, within the regulatory framework adopted by the Authority to govern this vital and important sector, to keep pace with international best practices and the approved road map, which regulates all areas of security and safety in delivery operations.
The procedure of issuing additional front plates for delivery bikes comes within a package of joint solutions and initiatives between the Authority and the Dubai Police General Command, and after holding a series of meetings with partners from government and private agencies and consulting companies, to discuss and review procedures to develop the organization of this sector and set requirements that guarantee the safety of drivers and the safety of road users in a way that enhances safety on the emirate’s roads.
Ahmed Mahboob, Executive Director of the Licensing Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority, confirmed that the decision to issue the additional front plate will apply to bikes in the delivery sector, as two plates (front and back) have been allocated in gold and written in black, bearing the symbol (9) to distinguish the category of delivery bikes, and they will be issued with a new unified number that differs from the previous plate number, and gradually when licensing or renewing the license of each bike, according to the date of its renewal or if it is damaged or lost.
Mahboob explained: “The decision does not include non-commercial bicycles (individual bicycles), and the issuance of the additional front plate is limited to bicycles used in the activities of transporting parcels, messages and documents, organizing and delivering orders services, managing transportation and delivery requests via electronic platforms and smart applications, and renting motorcycles and electric bicycles if they are operated in any of the activities referred to.”
Mahboob pointed out that this measure comes in response to the rapid growth witnessed by the order delivery sector in recent years, in terms of the volume of demand and the increase in the number of bicycles operating on the emirate’s roads, stressing that the controls set by the Authority to regulate and govern this sector will contribute significantly to raising the level of traffic discipline, in addition to enhancing the experience of transportation and delivery services, in line with the Roads and Transport Authority’s priorities in maintaining the safety of road users.
It is noteworthy that the Authority, in coordination with the Dubai Police General Command, had recently announced the legalization of driving delivery bikes on the fast lanes in the streets of Dubai, and prohibiting delivery bike drivers from driving in the fast lanes on the far left in streets consisting of 5 or more lanes, or driving in the fast lane on the far left on streets consisting of 3 or 4 lanes, while there is nothing preventing delivery bike drivers from driving on streets that consist of two lanes or less.
