On the occasion of Arabic Language Day, UNESCO organized an event at its headquarters in Paris that focused on the role of education, technology, media and public policies in enhancing the presence of the Arabic language and making it available to multilingual communities with limited resources.

The occasion formed a platform for cultural dialogue and reflected the organization’s commitment to linguistic diversity, with primary support from the Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Charitable Foundation and its pioneering program in supporting the Arabic language, which contributes to empowering communities, expanding the production of knowledge in Arabic, and enhancing its position globally.

UNESCO Director-General Khaled Al-Anani said that the Arabic language is characterized by a long history and unlimited creativity, stressing that the Arabic language will remain a source of inspiration and a link between cultures to work on building a more comprehensive and pluralistic future for future generations. On behalf of UNESCO, he extended his congratulations to everyone on the occasion of this International Day.

The King Salman International Academy for the Arabic Language had organized an event at the permanent headquarters of the United Nations to commemorate Arabic Language Day, with the participation of the Under-Secretary-General for the Department of General Assembly and Conference Affairs, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the President of the General Assembly, and the Deputy Permanent Observer of the League of Arab States to the United Nations. It was also attended by a number of diplomats and those interested in the Arabic language.

The Secretary-General of the Academy, Dr. Abdullah Al-Washmi, indicated that this event is being organized at the United Nations headquarters for the fourth year in a row, and he spoke of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s interest in enhancing the presence of the Arabic language in international forums and expanding its use in various fields.

He pointed out that many languages ​​of the world were influenced by the Arabic language: “Many people from many languages ​​can hear the Arabic sound and find in their heritage a variety of Arabic words that have been transformed and entered into the languages ​​of the world.”

In turn, Movses Abelian, Under-Secretary-General for the Department of General Assembly and Conference Management, who also holds the role of United Nations Coordinator for Multilingualism, said: “Arabic Language Day provides the opportunity to reflect on one of the most influential and rich languages ​​in the world: the Arabic language. The Arabic language has shaped poetry, science, philosophy, literature and cultural exchange for centuries. It has brought together civilizations and served as a repository of knowledge and a platform for dialogue across regions and generations.”
