المملكة: Tomorrow.. the skies of the Arab world will witness the peak of the Dibbiyat meteor shower

Attest Sky of the Arab World The Dibbiyat meteor shower will peak at midnight tomorrow and during the dawn hours of Tuesday, December 23, 2025, coinciding with the beginning of Winter season astronomically, and it is the last major meteor shower during the year 2025.

He reported President of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah Engineer Majed Abu Zahra, said that The pinnacle meteors are active annually from December 17 to 25, when a cloud of dusty debris scattered along the orbit of the periodic comet Tuttle (8P/Tuttle) crosses the Earth. When these particles enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speeds, they burn at an altitude of about 80 to 120 kilometers and appear in the form of quick flashes and lines of light in the sky.

Viewing opportunities

During the period of activity, the chances of viewing increase. Watch the pinniped meteors when their radiant point is in the constellation Ursa Minor above the northern horizon, as the number of visible meteors increases the higher this point is in the sky.

The President of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah confirmed that he expects the shower to reach its peak during the dawn hours when the radiant point is at its highest height in the sky, and pinniped meteors usually produce about 5 to 10 meteors per hour under ideal monitoring conditions.

The crescent at the beginning of the month

He indicated that The moon this year will be in the crescent phase at the beginning of the month, and will not be present in the sky during the night hours at peak time, which provides a dark sky suitable for observing meteors with little influence from the moon’s illumination.

Abu Zahira stated that the Dibyat meteor shower was discovered relatively recently compared to the rest of the annual meteor showers, as it was identified only about one century ago after noticing that some of the meteors seen in late December originate from the same celestial region; Which confirms that it is a periodic shower and not a random one.
