"health" Laser kidney stone fragmentation surgery is introduced for children in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, December 23 / WAM / SEHA, a subsidiary of the PureHealth Group, announced the introduction of laser kidney stone fragmentation surgery technology for children in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in a medical achievement that reflects its commitment to developing specialized health care services provided to children, and enhancing access to advanced treatment solutions for complex cases of kidney stones.

The announcement comes after treating a case of a nine-month-old child, who was suffering from several kidney stones as a result of a rare genetic disorder known as “cystinuria,” which is the same disorder that his two-year-old brother suffers from.

After the child underwent an urgent procedure to install a stent in Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, with the aim of relieving the blockage in the kidney, he received several sessions of laser lithotripsy, during which stones were removed from the ureter and from both kidneys at the same time.

Dr. Hamid Reda Toosi, a urology consultant at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, said that laser lithotripsy surgery is a very important intervention for children with kidney stones, noting that providing this procedure contributes to providing comprehensive care and long-term support for children and their families.

He pointed out that children with kidney or bladder stones are more vulnerable to the recurrence of the stones and the occurrence of long-term complications, including decreased kidney function. Patients are referred to pediatric nephrology specialists to conduct periodic evaluations and follow up on kidney function, to reduce these risks and ensure continuity of examinations and follow-up after surgeries.

He stressed that close cooperation between urology surgeons and nephrology specialists represents an essential element in the comprehensive management of kidney stone cases in children.
