Signing a new framework for cooperation between the United Nations and Iraq to promote development

The new framework includes:
🔹Improving access to education, health and social services: Ensure that all Iraqis – especially women, children and families affected by displacement – have access to quality services and effective social protection systems.
🔹Supporting job opportunities and economic growth: Providing and creating job opportunities, empowering youth and women, and promoting sustainable and green economic initiatives.
🔹Protecting the environment and confronting climate change: Supporting Iraq’s efforts to manage its natural resources, adapt to the effects of climate change, and reduce disaster risks.
🔹Effective governance and rule of law: Strengthening the capabilities of public institutions, promoting justice and equity, and supporting peace and social cohesion throughout Iraq.
The cooperation framework was signed, on the Iraqi side, by Muhammad Ali Tamim, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, while on the United Nations side, it was signed by Ghulam Muhammad Ishaqzai, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator of the United Nations in Iraq.
During the signing ceremony that took place on Thursday, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning, Muhammad Ali Tamim, said that the cooperation embodies his country’s commitment to building a future. “Brighter for his people.” He explained that the new framework unites resources, expertise, programs and efforts in order to achieve tangible progress to achieve national goals and move forward with implementation 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
As the end of the work of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) approaches in the coming days, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mohammed Al-Hassan, said that the signing of the cooperation framework represents a significant shift. “Natural and honorable for the relationship” Between the two extremes, it reflects “An organized, responsible transition from the stage of supporting political stability to the stage of consolidating the sustainable development partnership.”
The implementation of the cooperation framework will be supervised by a high-level joint steering committee, co-chaired by the Ministry of Planning and the United Nations Resident Coordinator, and including representatives of government institutions and United Nations agencies, which will review the progress achieved annually to ensure that the framework remains on track. The implementation process will also be supported through a dedicated partnership fund, along with a resource mobilization strategy to secure the necessary financing.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq, Ghulam Muhammad Ishaqzai, said that the agreement represents a new chapter in the international partnership with the country following the conclusion of the mandate of the UN mission and the gradual end of humanitarian activities, and will focus on “Providing integrated technical support and high-quality advice to support social and economic development in Iraq and accelerate the achievement of… Sustainable development goals“.
