Sudan – The United Nations takes note of the peace initiative presented by the transitional Prime Minister

The Office of the United Nations Spokesman reported on Friday that the Secretary-General continues to stress that striving to achieve a lasting and comprehensive peace is crucial as the conflict enters a new year.
The Secretary-General called on the parties to agree on an immediate cessation of hostilities and reach a permanent ceasefire. He urged all Sudanese actors to prioritize consensus and formulate a common vision for a civilian-led transition.
The Office of the United Nations Spokesman explained that the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General to Sudan, Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, is fully prepared to continue consultations with the two parties on reaching a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the conflict, to complement and enhance the ongoing efforts made by member states and key partners.
During his speech at a Security Council session, Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idris presented an initiative for peace in Sudan, noting that the initiative is based on international principles and “provides a rich, realistic, applicable and comprehensive framework for protecting civilians from atrocities, restoring state authority and responsibility, and opening the door to national reconciliation.”
He stressed that the initiative comes from within, “and is not imposed on us. It is not about winning a war, but rather about ending the cycle of violence that Sudan has suffered from for decades.”
Idris spoke in detail about the terms of that initiative, including a ceasefire, the gathering of militia fighters in specific camps, and disarmament, as well as what relates to displaced persons, refugees, and humanitarian aid. He also touched on “confidence-building measures” to ensure response to the Government of Sudan’s peace initiative, which includes political, economic, security and social aspects.
UNISFA mission completes the evacuation of its base in Kadugli
On the other hand, the United Nations Interim Security Mission for Abyei (UNISFA) announced the completion of the evacuation of its logistical base in Kadugli, South Kordofan, after nearly thirteen years of operations. Mission personnel and some NGO staff were successfully evacuated over the weekend.
This withdrawal follows a comprehensive assessment of the security situation in Kadugli following drone attacks on the logistics base on 13 December, which claimed the lives of six UN peacekeepers and seriously injured nine others.
The bodies of the six peacekeepers killed in the attack have been flown to Bangladesh, while eight of the injured are receiving treatment in a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.
