The New Syrian Lira

President Ahmed Al-Sharaa confirmed that the process of replacing the currency and deleting two zeros from the old lira aims to facilitate daily transactions and simplify monetary operations.

He considered that the launch of the new currency represents the end of a previous stage and the beginning of a new stage to which the Syrian people aspire, in light of a different economic reality.

Al-Sharaa explained that the decision to replace the currency came after He held lengthy discussions, based on previous international experiences, pointing out that such a step is precise and sensitive and requires calm and organized management.

Syrian Economy

He explained that improving the economy depends primarily on increasing production, reducing unemployment rates, and strengthening the role of the banking sector as the backbone of economic activity.

The Syrian President indicated that the design of the new currency reflects the Syrian national identity in its entire geography, far from glorifying people, with a focus on symbols linked to Syrian reality.

He also stressed the importance of restoring citizens’ confidence in the Syrian pound, which had been damaged over the past years due to the collapse of economic sectors and the rise in the exchange rate, which led many to hoard outside the banking system.

Modern security features

The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdul Qadir Al-Husariyya, announced that the process of replacing the currency will take place easily and flexibly through 66 companies and about a thousand dedicated outlets, explaining that the new categories will include six categories: 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, and 500 liras, so that the new lira is equivalent to 100 old liras.

Al-Husariyya stressed that the replacement will not affect the real value of the currency, because the change is limited to the nominal value only, while maintaining the size of the monetary mass without increases.

He also explained that the new currency is equipped with modern security features, in addition to features that facilitate its use by the visually impaired and the blind.

Replacement dates

He indicated that the replacement process will begin on the first of January 2026 and will continue for a period of 90 days, subject to extension, and will be carried out free of charge without imposing any fees or taxes.

During the period of coexistence between the two currencies, sellers will be obligated to deal in the old and new lira together, calling on citizens not to give up the old currency before the end of the specified period.

The Central Bank stressed that adherence to the instructions The announcement will contribute to the success of the replacement process and ensure its smoothness, thus enhancing confidence in the Syrian economy in the strategic term.
