Trump postpones implementing heavy tariffs on imported goods

US President Donald Trump, for a year, imposed heavy customs duties on some imported furniture goods, shortly before they went into effect Thursday.
This increase was planned as part of a previous package of Customs dutiesimposed by Trump on specific sectors, as part of policies that he began implementing since his return to the White House.
Postponement of customs duties
But with the increasing burden of living on American families, Trump decided on Wednesday evening to postpone the scheduled customs duties of 30% on some types of upholstered furniture and 50% on kitchen cabinets and bathroom units, until January 1, 2027.
The White House said in a statement announcing this decision "In view of the ongoing fruitful negotiations on wood product imports, the President is postponing the tariff increase to allow further negotiations with other countries."
Trump’s tariffs in 2025 included goods ranging from steel to cars, and additional investigations are currently underway that may lead to the imposition of new duties.
