Due to winter weather, dozens of flights were canceled at Frankfurt Airport

This morning, Frankfurt Airport witnessed the cancellation of a large number of flights due to snowfall and ice warnings.

A spokeswoman for Fraport, which operates the airport, said in statements to the German News Agency (DPA) that out of 1,052 flights scheduled throughout the day, 98 flights were cancelled, indicating that the number may rise during the day.

The spokeswoman added that the airport began its day in the framework of “tense winter operation,” with the expectation of major disturbances, explaining that large winter maintenance teams are working in the field, and the take-off and landing corridors are being cleaned, while 34 machines are being used to remove ice from planes at their stopping sites.

The airport administration asked travelers to check the status of their flights early before travelling, and to allocate a longer time to reach the airport in proportion to the weather conditions. It also recommended that passengers be present in the passenger terminal at Frankfurt Airport at least three hours before take-off time.

The German Meteorological Service had issued a warning of severe weather disturbances due to the risk of ice forming in parts of the state of Hesse, where the city of Frankfurt is located.
