A British company displays energy-generating floors at the World Future Energy Summit

Abu Dhabi, January 14 / WAM / During the World Future Energy Summit, within Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, the British company “Pavegen” is showcasing an innovative technology that generates renewable energy from pedestrian steps.
Paul Price, the company’s global director of marketing and communications, told the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that his London-based company has developed an “energy-generating flooring” system that converts every step on the tiles into electricity, generating between 2 to 5 joules of energy with each step. He added that the company also launched this year a hybrid product that combines solar energy and energy resulting from footsteps, which enhances energy production in high-traffic areas such as sidewalks, entrances, sports centers, exhibitions, and means of transportation.
He explained that the system contributes to generating micro energy, noting that each step generates limited energy that is not enough to operate a house or building, but is suitable for operating low-energy devices such as LED lighting or charging mobile phones via USB ports.
Regarding the challenges, Price stressed that the cost of the system on a small scale may be high, so the company is focusing on expanding the scope of manufacturing to reduce costs and make the product more competitive.
He explained that the system works excellently as a tool to showcase companies’ commitment to sustainability and achieving net-zero emissions goals.
He pointed out that the UAE has already witnessed applied projects, including the installation of energy-generating floors in the children’s pavilion at Expo Dubai. Children participate in an interactive experience that generates energy, which reflects an entertaining and educational aspect at the same time.
Price confirmed that the company intends to open an office in the Emirates within the next 18 months, to strengthen its presence locally and expand the system’s applications in public spaces and institutions, which reflects its seriousness in investing in the Emirati market and developing long-term local partnerships.
He pointed out that the company’s attendance at the World Future Energy Summit aims to search for opportunities to expand the use of the system in Emirati society, stressing that the UAE represents an ideal environment to showcase these innovations and create enjoyable and useful experiences for the public, and is also a platform for developing future partnerships.
