Saudi Arabia receives 20 high-speed “Talgo” trains worth 1.3 billion euros

Company won "Talgo" Spanish, leader in the design, manufacture and maintenance of High-speed light rail trains, with a contract to manufacture and maintain 20 new high-speed trains for the Saudi Railways Company (SAR), for the railway linking Mecca, Medina and Jeddah.
This new contract will add 1.3 billion euros to Talgo’s deal record, bringing the total value of the deals to approximately 6 billion euros, the Spanish company announced in an official statement.
These 20 new trains join 35 trains. Talgo was previously supplied to Saudi Arabia in 2018, which operates with high efficiency and is maintained by the company.
This new contract was awarded by the two ministries Transportationand logistics services, and the Ministry of Finance, through the Spanish consortium responsible for the second phase of the project "Haramain Express Train"of which Talgo is a part.
Specifications of the new trains
The 20 new trains have easy access to the entire platform level, without any stairs inside the train, which provides faster passenger movement during peak times, and facilitates the transportation of passengers and luggage.
These new trains will contribute to increasing the current fleet used on the line, which operates more than 100 trips daily with Talgo trains, and this number rises to more than 140 trips daily. Through Hajj Season.
The Haramain High Speed Train is 450 kilometers long, built and operated to standards almost identical to the Spanish high-speed rail network, with a maximum speed of 300 kilometers per hour, and uses a Level 2 ERTMS signaling system.
Details of the deal for 20 new trains
The 20 new trains have similar characteristics to the 35 trains previously produced by Talgo, which the company operates Spanish has been in Saudi Arabia since 2018.
Each train consists of two tractors (two locomotives) and 13 passenger cars with a capacity of 417 seats distributed in two classes, in addition to spaces designated for restaurants and passengers with special needs.
The supply of these new trains comes within the Kingdom’s plans to continue expanding passenger transport services and meet the growing demand.
The Saudi company operating the line currently owns a fleet of 35 trains from Style "Talgo 350"with a maximum operating speed of 300 km/h, achieving excellent operational results.
Under this new contract, Talgo will be responsible for the maintenance of all trains that will make up the expanded fleet – the current 35 trains and the additional 20 – until 2033, with the possibility of extending the contract until 2038.
