"Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity" Launches Everlasting Chemicals Inspection Services "PFAS"

ABU DHABI, 1st April, 2017 (WAM) – The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council launched testing and analysis services for perpetual chemical substances (PFAS) through its central testing laboratory, in a qualitative step that strengthens the quality infrastructure system in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and supports efforts aimed at protecting public health and the environment and ensuring the safety of products in accordance with the highest international standards and practices.
Permanent chemicals “PFAS – Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances” fall within a wide spectrum of industrial compounds that are characterized by their high ability to resist environmental degradation, which leads to their persistence for extended periods in water, soil and air, in addition to their accumulation in the human body. Global interest in monitoring these substances and reducing their effects has increased in recent years, due to their possible association with a number of long-term health and environmental risks.
The new service provided by the Central Testing Laboratory provides advanced analytical capabilities that enable the detection of extremely small concentrations of PFAS compounds in water, various materials and products, using high-precision laboratory techniques capable of monitoring these compounds at very low levels of up to parts per trillion, ensuring the provision of reliable scientific data that supports the work of regulatory and supervisory bodies.
His Excellency Engineer Fahd Gharib Al Shamsi, Acting Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, confirmed that the launch of this service embodies the Council’s firm commitment to strengthening the position of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as a leading global platform in developing international standards and consolidating quality concepts, indicating that the development of services comes within the framework of continuous efforts to support the quality infrastructure system, in keeping with the emirate’s directions towards building a sustainable economy based on knowledge and innovation.
For his part, His Excellency Engineer Abdullah Hassan Al-Muaini, Executive Director of the Central Testing Laboratory Sector, said that the launch of the PFAS testing service represents a qualitative addition that enhances the advanced analytical capabilities of the laboratory, stressing that the introduction of this service increases the laboratory’s readiness to face the modern environmental challenges witnessed by many countries of the world.
He added that these advanced analytical capabilities enable the laboratory to provide regulatory and industrial authorities with accurate and reliable scientific data that contribute to supporting evidence-based decision-making and enhancing levels of environmental and health safety in the emirate, noting that these services will support a wide range of vital sectors, including the water and environment sector, the industrial sector, and the energy sector, in addition to the authorities concerned with public health and product safety.
The analytical capabilities contribute to consolidating the position of the Central Testing Laboratory as an advanced regional center for specialized tests, and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a leading global center in the fields of quality, environmental sustainability, and protecting community health, in conjunction with the growing international interest in monitoring eternal chemicals and developing regulatory frameworks and supervisory programs associated with them in view of their potential impacts on the environment and public health.
