Khalifa University hosts a meeting of the UAE-Japanese Academic Cooperation Steering Council

ABU DHABI, 10th February, 2018 (WAM) – Khalifa University of Science and Technology and the Japan Institute for Energy Economics in Abu Dhabi hosted the annual meeting of the UAE-Japan Academic Cooperation Steering Council, which strengthens the growing strategic partnership between the two countries in the fields of science, technology and innovation.
His Excellency Professor Ibrahim Al-Hajri, President of Khalifa University, welcomed the Japanese delegation, which included Dr. Tatsuya Terazawa, President and CEO of the Japan Institute for Energy Economics, Tokoya Kanamori, Managing Director of the Japan Center for International Cooperation in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Atsushi Yamashita, Professor in the Department of Engineering Environmental Studies and Humanity at the University of Tokyo, Dr. Shinya Otosuka, Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Kyushu Institute of Technology, and Shiro Murakawa, Senior Managing Director of the Civil Engineering Group at the University of Tokyo. Nikken Seiki Co., Ltd. and CEO of the Japan Offshore Reverse Dam Association.
The meeting was also attended by Professor Samuel Mao, Director of the Aspire Sustainability Research Institute at Khalifa University, Dr. Yukari Yamashita, Managing Director at the Japan Institute of Energy Economics, Dr. Ashraf Al-Najdawi, Vice President for External Relations and Chairman of the Administrative Board at Khalifa University, and many members of the academic staff.
His Excellency Professor Ibrahim Al-Hajri said that the partnership with Japan reflects the extent of Khalifa University’s commitment to advancing high-impact research that supports the long-term innovation agenda in the UAE. By bringing together the most prominent researchers and partners from the industrial sector and policy makers from both countries, we contribute to strengthening a cooperative system to accelerate the movement of scientific discoveries and provide practical solutions.
During the meeting, the Council decided to organize a bilateral research workshop and launch a student exchange program for the year 2026.
During the meeting, research teams from Khalifa University and partner institutions from Japan reviewed images of the tremendous progress achieved in strategic areas, including a presentation of the latest developments in the field of robotics.
The meeting’s discussions also touched on expanding multidisciplinary research with a profound impact, increasing joint academic scholarship offers, improving the levels of exploration of researchers and students, in addition to enhancing mechanisms for sustainable exchange of knowledge.
The meeting also highlighted deepening cooperation within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
