In light of a harsh winter in Ukraine, the United Nations calls on Russia to stop attacks on energy infrastructure

UN Commissioner Volker Türk indicated that last night, Russia launched again a large-scale attack targeting energy infrastructure throughout Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of civilians woke up without electricity or heat. He stated that the consequences of these strikes are catastrophically wide and affect all aspects of civilian life.

Millions of families have electricity for only a few hours a day. Schools were forced to close because classrooms could not be heated, and access to medical care was inaccessible. Elderly people and people with disabilities on the upper floors of residential buildings cannot go down and up on foot without electric elevators.

The Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed that targeting civilian infrastructure is prohibited under international humanitarian law. He called on the Russian Federation to stop these attacks immediately.
