Sharjah, February 15, 2017 – Sheikh Haitham bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Deputy Head of the Ruler’s Office in the city of Kalba, yesterday evening, opened the activities of the 23rd edition of Sharjah Heritage Days, in the Wadi Al Hilo area, in a festive scene that combined memory and identity.
The opening was attended by Dr. Abdulaziz Abdulrahman Al-Musallam, President of the Sharjah Heritage Institute, Chairman of the Supreme Committee organizing Sharjah Heritage Days, and heads and directors of departments and municipal councils.
The opening ceremony included a tour of the participating entities, heritage markets, and productive families, passing through the mountainous and agricultural environment, in addition to performances by popular bands, traditional crafts, and local cuisine.
Dr. Al-Musallam stressed that choosing Wadi Al-Helu to host the events carries a clear cultural significance that heritage is part of daily life and not just a display in museums or major cities.
He praised the continued support provided by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, for projects to preserve heritage and protect historical sites, noting that investing in cultural memory is an investment in the future of society.
He explained that the Sharjah Heritage Days have turned into a cultural platform that revives folk crafts and arts and connects new generations to their roots as a source of creativity and awareness, pointing out that interest in heritage is based on documentation, study and contemporary presentation, which makes it supportive of cultural, tourism and educational development and an essential element in strengthening national identity.
The activities of Sharjah Heritage Days continue in Wadi Al Hilo, through workshops, artisans’ exhibitions and personal museums, to provide an integrated program that introduces visitors to the region and the community’s customs and traditions.
