Cyclone Jizani kills 59 people and forces 16,000 to flee in Madagascar.

The National Office for Risk and Disaster Management in Madagascar said on Monday that at least 59 people died after Cyclone Jizani hit the country last week, while the office is still assessing the impact of the second tropical storm to hit the Indian Ocean country this year.

The office reported that the hurricane caused the displacement of 16,428 people, the loss of 15, the injury of 804 people, and 423,986 people were classified as affected by the disaster. The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs stated that Jizani swept the country ten days after tropical cyclone Vithia. The first hurricane claimed the lives of 14 people and displaced more than 31,000.

At its peak, Hurricane Jizani’s wind speed reached approximately 185 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching speeds of approximately 270 kilometers per hour, which is strong enough to uproot metal panels from the roofs of houses and topple large trees.

The Meteorological Authority said that the authorities have placed the Ambanehi region in southwestern Madagascar on a state of high alert, as Gizani is expected to pass about 100 kilometers from its coast on Monday evening, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of about 65 kilometers per hour without heavy rain.
