Former South Korean president imprisoned for life due to “martial law”

Today, a life sentence was issued against former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol due to his imposition of martial law, which lasted only about 6 hours, during the month of December 2024 to suppress the opposition.
The Seoul Central District Court found Yoon guilty of mobilizing military and police forces in an illegal attempt to take control of the liberal-led National Assembly, arrest politicians, and establish unfettered power for a prolonged period.
Yoon is likely to appeal the ruling.
The public prosecution demanded the death penalty for the former president, and believed that he deserved the harshest punishment under the law because of the threat his actions posed to democracy in the country.
Yoon defended the martial law decree, which was issued on December 3, 2024, as a necessary measure against the liberals, whom he described as “anti-state” forces that obstruct his agenda with their parliamentary majority.
