On time… Denmark is preparing for decisive elections amid tension with Washington


The Prime Minister announced , Thursday, make an appointment on March 24, 2026, stressing that the future of her government is linked to the results of this entitlement.

Frederiksen said before the Danish parliament that she had asked the king to officially call for the “folking” elections, explaining that her continuation as head of government depends on the size of the popular mandate that voters will grant to the Social Democratic Party.

According to the constitutional system in Denmark, the head of government must call for elections before October 31, that is, four years after the last legislative vote.

Friedrichsen reviewed the broad outlines of her electoral program, stressing that security policy will remain a top priority, and that Denmark is required to continue strengthening its defense capabilities and contributing to protecting Europe from Russian threats.

She stressed that during the next four years the country will need to rely more on itself, while reformulating its relations with the United States.

Relations between Denmark and Washington have witnessed tension recently, against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s desire to acquire Greenland, an autonomous island that Washington considers to be of strategic importance for its national security.

Denmark and Greenland are currently holding discussions with the United States regarding the future of the Arctic island, in light of the escalating international interest in its strategic location.
