New demonstrations in Venezuela demanding the release of Maduro and his wife

The Venezuelan capital, Caracas, witnessed once again demonstrations by supporters of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, two months after they were arrested by the United States.

A large number of supporters of the Chavista movement and the former government gathered in the streets of the capital the day before yesterday, raising Venezuelan flags and pictures of Maduro and his wife, demanding their “immediate release.”

These demonstrations come at a crucial time when the Venezuelan crisis is witnessing important political and legal developments, as the president and his wife are still detained in the United States awaiting the progress of a criminal case related to drug-related charges. Maduro’s lawyer recently requested that the case be dropped due to a legal dispute over financing his legal defense, in a move that may affect the course of the trial.

Former Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has been temporarily assuming the presidency of Venezuela since Maduro’s arrest, in light of attempts to maintain stability and manage internal affairs, while facing pressure from Washington to implement economic and political reforms.
