Encyclopedia of the Prophet’s Mosque.. Scientific monitoring of the urban transformations of the mosque throughout the ages

In the context of continuing care to document the history of The Prophet’s Mosque and its landmarks, a project highlights "Encyclopedia of the Architecture of the Prophet’s Mosque"issued by the Center for Research and Studies Medina, as one of the most prominent scientific projects specialized in monitoring the urban transformations of the mosque throughout the ages, and presenting them within an encyclopedic framework that combines academic accuracy and the use of modern technologies.
The project represents an integrated scientific reference that documents the stages of architecture of the Prophet’s Mosque since its founding in the Prophet’s era, through the expansions it witnessed in various Islamic eras, all the way to the major expansions in the prosperous Saudi era, which contributed to accommodating the increasing numbers of worshipers and visitors, While preserving the architectural identity of the place and its spiritual specificity.
Analysis of the architectural elements of the mosque
The encyclopedia is not limited to the historical narration, but rather goes beyond it to an in-depth analysis of the architectural elements of the mosque, such as the porticoes, domes and minarets, and a review of their development and functions over time.
In addition to documenting the landmarks associated with it, which reflects the integration of the urban dimension with its religious and cultural role.
This work comes as an extension of the efforts made by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Serving the Two Holy Mosques, by supporting specialized knowledge projects, and promoting documentation of the Islamic heritage, in a way that contributes to preserving the urban memory of the Prophet’s Mosque and making it available to researchers and those interested according to solid scientific foundations.

The encyclopedia is expected to contribute to filling a knowledge gap in the field of specialized architectural studies of the Prophet’s Mosque, and to represent a qualitative reference for researchers and scholars, as well as highlighting the dimensions Civilizational and humanitarian issues related to the architecture of one of the most prominent Islamic monuments in the world.
The Director of the Scientific Department at the Center for Research and Studies of Medina, Rashid Ayyash Al-Harbi, indicated that this publication comes within a group of scientific publications issued by the Center to serve the history and civilization of Medina, and to enrich the Islamic Library, which is interested in specialized qualitative studies, which is considered a pure resource and a comprehensive resource for research and studies related to the history of the Medina region, given the Center’s adoption of High standards for approving and judging such studies.
