Michael’s movie breaks records… and restores the brilliance of musical biopics

The film “Michael” succeeded in bringing about a clear shift in the attitudes of the global audience. It achieved a strong and exceptional start at the box office, recording global revenues exceeding $206 million, during only its first days of showing. The film, which deals with the biography of pop legend Michael Jackson, also reflects a strong return to musical biographical films, which over the past years seemed to have lost part of their popular luster, before this work came to redraw the features of their commercial and artistic presence.

In the American market alone, the film grossed approximately $95 million during its first weekend, a remarkable number that was recorded when it was shown in approximately 3,955 cinemas. These numbers enabled the film to break the previous record for the best opening for a musical biopic, which was held by “Straight Outta Compton.”

 

The achievements did not stop there, as the film recorded the best opening in the career of director Antoine Fuqua, surpassing his previous works. It also gave producer Graham King a new number in his list of achievements, surpassing the great success he had previously achieved with the film “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

This performance reflects the ability of studios to restore public confidence in major cinematic works, especially when they combine two elements: biography and musical passion, along with massive production and thoughtful direction.

The success was not limited to the American market, but extended to 64 countries around the world, where the film topped the box office in most of them, setting records in 63 international markets, as the best opening for a musical biographical film.

Revenues are expected to increase with the film’s release in additional markets, most notably Japan, where Michael Jackson’s works enjoy widespread and deep-rooted popularity, which enhances the chances of the film’s commercial momentum continuing in the coming weeks.

The film, which succeeded in blending the human and artistic aspects of Jackson’s life, contributed to attracting different segments of the audience, from music fans to those interested in biographies. One of the most prominent attractions in the film was the performance by Jaafar Jackson, who portrayed the character of his uncle, Michael Jackson. This performance received great interest, due to the sensitivity and complexity of the character, as well as the high expectations associated with presenting the biography of one of the most famous artists in the history of music.

However, despite this commercial success, the critical reception was not at the same level, as the film received an average rating of 40% on the Rotten Tomatoes platform, indicating a division in critics’ opinions regarding the film’s treatment of some aspects.

On the other hand, the audience’s reactions were more enthusiastic, as the film recorded a high rating of 96%, and it received a grade of (A-) from the “CinemaScore” organization, which is a grade similar to what was achieved by successful musical films, such as: “Elvis” and “Rocketman.”

The data indicate that women constituted the largest percentage of the film’s audience, at 61%, while audiences of African origin topped the attendance list at 38%, followed by Latino audiences at 26%, which reflects the great diversity of Michael Jackson’s audience base, and his ability to attract different generations and cultures.
