A new unit to monitor users of personal transportation in Dubai

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai and the General Command of Dubai Police jointly announced the launch of a personal transportation monitoring unit to monitor and control these means, and its activation will begin as of next May 1, on all bicycle paths, main streets, and flexible transportation areas in the emirate.
This step comes within the framework of the two parties’ keenness to ensure compliance with traffic rules and safe driving for users of flexible means of transportation, which enhances traffic safety for all road users.
The unit aims to monitor unsafe behaviors and control violations related to the use of bicycles and electric “scooters” by individuals, including adherence to designated paths, wearing a helmet and protective clothing, adhering to specified speeds, and preventing reckless driving or more than one person riding on a “scooter.” Violations will be issued and violating vehicles will be seized, in coordination with Emirates Auctions.
The joint unit will begin its work in all regions of the emirate, based on Resolution No. (13) of 2022 issued by the Executive Council of the Emirate of Dubai, regarding regulating the use of bicycles (including electric scooters, bicycles, and electric bicycles), provided that it focuses its efforts in a number of vital locations in Dubai, such as Jumeirah Beach Path, Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, the Water Canal, Business Bay, and Dubai Marina, in addition to the areas of Al Mankhool, Al Karama, and Al Hamriya. And Al-Rifaa and Al-Muraqabat.
The Executive Director of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority, Hussein Al-Banna, said: “The launch of the joint unit comes as an extension of the strategic partnership between the Authority and Dubai Police, within an integrated work system that supports the future visions of the emirate in the fields of transport, safety and innovation. It also confirms the Authority’s keenness to improve the culture of traffic safety among users of personal means of transportation, and enhance their commitment to traffic regulations, by providing a network of safe paths designated for cyclists, with signs showing the requirements for driving on the paths, in addition to continuing to monitor Reckless behaviour, ensuring the safety of everyone and making Dubai a leading city in adopting smart and safe transportation systems.”
Al-Banna added: “The joint unit reflects the authority’s keenness to achieve integration between infrastructure plans and safe operation requirements, which contributes to enhancing the culture of traffic safety among all segments of society, and providing a smart and sustainable transportation environment. It also represents a new qualitative step in the process of enhancing safety and security within the integrated transportation system in Dubai, in a way that serves Dubai’s residents and visitors, and keeps pace with its global leadership in the fields of sustainable and smart transportation.”
For his part, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, confirmed that the launch of the unit comes within the framework of ongoing cooperation between Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority, to enhance traffic safety for road users, especially users of personal transportation.
He explained that the unit will contribute to efforts aimed at reaching the highest levels of traffic safety, because of its important role in reducing wrong behavior and enhancing traffic discipline, stressing the great responsibility that falls on users of personal means of transportation in adhering to traffic laws.
He valued the strategic partnership between Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority, and working as one team, which contributes to implementing many joint traffic initiatives in the field of traffic safety, providing the best pioneering services and applying the best international practices, with the aim of making the public happy and enhancing security, safety and traffic safety in the Emirate of Dubai.
The Authority called on users of flexible transportation to review the driving requirements on the routes, the rider’s obligations, and the list of violations available on the Authority’s page.
