Industrial production in Germany fell by 0.7% in March
Berlin, May 9 / WAM / The German Federal Statistical Office announced that industrial production in the country declined by 0.7% last March compared to February, explaining that the decline came mainly as a result of a decrease in energy production by 4%, and the production of the machinery manufacturing sector by 2.7%.
The office said, in recent data, that the increase in production in the construction sector by 1.9%, as well as in the automobile industry by the same proportion, led to a relative reduction in the severity of the decline in production, pointing out that industrial production, excluding energy and the construction sector, decreased by 0.9% compared to February, and the production of investment goods, such as machinery and equipment, by 1.6%, and consumer goods by 1.9%, while the production of intermediate goods increased by 0.8%.
The data showed a decline in industrial production in March on an annual basis, by 4.1% compared to the same month in 2025, while the total production of the productive sector, which includes industry, energy and construction, decreased by 2.8% on an annual basis, while average production during the period from January to March 2026 recorded a decline of 1.2% compared to the previous three months.
On the other hand, energy-intensive industries recorded an increase in production by 1.2% during March compared to February, and their production during the first three months of the year increased by 2.1% compared to the previous period, although it remained lower by 1.2% compared to March of last year.
The office explained that energy-intensive industries, such as chemical, metal, paper, and glass industries, were consuming in 2021 about 77% of the total energy used in the German industrial sector, while it constituted about 17% of the industrial value added, and employed about 930,000 people in about 7,000 industrial facilities.
