Al-Sharaa appoints a new Secretary-General for the Presidency in place of his brother

Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa made a cabinet reshuffle on Saturday, including a number of ministers and officials, including his brother, according to official media reports.

The new appointments published by the Syrian News Agency (SANA) included the appointment of former Homs Governor Abdul Rahman Badr al-Din al-Amaa as Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic, succeeding Maher al-Sharaa, the president’s brother.

Information Minister Hamza Al-Mustafa and Agriculture Minister Amjad Badr were also replaced by Khaled Fawaz Zaarour and Basil Hafez Al-Suwaidan, respectively.

Before his appointment, Zaarour held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Information at Damascus University.

Al-Sharaa also appointed new governors for a number of governorates, including Quneitra, Latakia, and Deir ez-Zor.

The Syrian transitional government was formed in March 2025, following the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad at the end of 2024, and was dominated by officials from the circle close to al-Sharaa.
