A horrific hit-and-run accident leaves people seriously injured in Italy

Eight people were injured, four of them in serious condition, after a driver suffering from psychological disorders ran over a number of pedestrians on a street in the city of Modena, northern Italy, on Saturday.

Footage from surveillance cameras, broadcast by Italian media, showed a car speeding at high speed on a street crowded with pedestrians and cyclists in the center of the city.

The city’s governor, Fabrizia Triolo, said during a press conference that the driver ran over a number of people before crashing his car into the front of a store.

She added that the driver tried to flee the scene of the accident, but four passers-by chased him and were able to surround him, before he brandished a knife and injured one of them.

She indicated that the driver, an economics graduate born in 1995, was not known to the police, but he went through a period of psychological turmoil in 2022.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the incident as “very serious” on the X platform.
