المملكة: A network of 62 tunnels enhances Mecca’s infrastructure and keeps pace with global cities

Form The tunnel networkin Mecca and the Holy Sites is one of the most prominent advanced infrastructure projects, as giant tunnels extend across the mountains of the Holy Capital back and forth to facilitate the movement of vehicles and pedestrians, and contribute to the smooth flow of movement and access to The Grand Mosqueand the Holy Sites with all ease and reassurance, in a scene that reflects the level of advanced infrastructure that rivals the largest cities in the world.

The total number of tunnels in Mecca and the Holy Sites is about 62 tunnels, with lengths exceeding 36,300 linear meters, within an integrated network extension, which in total includes more than 9,869 lighting units to enhance safety levels, and 513 jet fans to improve quality. The air inside the tunnels, in addition to 326 surveillance cameras to monitor performance and real-time operation, 881 fireboxes for rapid response, in addition to 42 backup generators, and advanced systems that include water pumps, fire extinguishing networks, smart sensors, and control and computer systems, ensuring the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.

Smart technology system

The tunnel network also relies on an integrated smart technology system that includes digital systems for real-time operation and monitoring, And solutions supported by artificial intelligence to increase the efficiency of analysis and follow-up, in addition to smart sensors that contribute to the speed of accurate response to emergency situations, thus enhancing the efficiency of movement management and the safety of tunnel users.

The Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, represented by the Secretariat of the Holy Capital, made all plans and arrangements early on, and before the start of the season, to prepare and monitor the tunnel network in Mecca and the Holy Sites, which contributes greatly to facilitating traffic movement and reducing congestion during the pilgrims’ movement between… The Grand Mosque and the Holy Sites.

The Secretariat formed a number of specialized technical and engineering teams to monitor the readiness of the tunnels and receive delegations of pilgrims, as the field teams work to carry out periodic follow-up work on the electrical networks, lighting units, ventilation systems, alarms and extinguishing devices, and to ensure the safety of all operating elements inside the tunnels.

Operation and Maintenance of the Tunnel Network

The Secretariat also supervises the operation and maintenance of the tunnel network through an integrated technical body that includes specialized engineers, supervisors and technicians, They work around the clock to ensure efficient operation and continuity of services, in addition to implementing a number of development projects for maintenance and operation, to keep pace with the rapid growth in the number of visitors to the Holy House of God.
