A former US intelligence official was arrested after a huge fortune was seized inside his home

The US authorities arrested a former senior official in the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) after discovering huge amounts of gold and cash in his home in Virginia, in a case that raised widespread questions about the nature of his work and the source of this wealth.
According to judicial documents, about 303 gold bars, each weighing approximately one kilogram, were found inside the home of official David Rush, and their value is estimated at more than $40 million, in addition to about two million dollars in cash, and a number of luxury watches, including Rolex watches, according to the New York Times.
The documents describe Rush as a “former senior executive-level employee of a US government agency.” He until recently held a senior position at the CIA, people familiar with the investigation said.
Rush faces charges related to fraud and providing misleading information about his academic qualifications, in addition to illegally obtaining compensation related to military leave.
The charging documents indicate that he claimed to belong to the US Naval Reserve even though he was discharged, and he also inflated his academic qualifications, which enabled him to obtain sums of money estimated at tens of thousands of dollars.
In a joint statement, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that the arrest took place on May 19, after an internal investigation was opened at the CIA that concluded there were possible legal violations, and the file was later referred to the judicial authorities.
Rush’s lawyer declined to comment, according to the New York Times.
From November to March, court documents say Rush requested and received “a large amount of foreign currency and tens of millions of dollars in gold bullion for business-related expenses.”
The judicial documents do not indicate why Rush kept such a large amount of gold, in addition to two million dollars in cash in his home, or what was the project that required amassing this huge wealth.
