"Sharjah Arts" Launches the audio chain "Extended dates" To document the history of visual arts in the Emirates

Sharjah, June 2, 2017 (WAM) – The Sharjah Art Foundation launched the short audio series “Extended Histories”, consisting of six episodes that shed light on the untold stories of the history of visual arts in Sharjah and the UAE in general, tracing its journey from the 1960s until the early 1990s, before the launch of the Sharjah Biennial in 1993.
The series combines oral history, archival materials, and academic analysis to examine the emergence of the Emirati art scene and its close connection to cultural and political movements in the Gulf region and the world. It also provides an in-depth reading of the concept of modernity in the region during a period rich in artistic experimentation and knowledge exchange, which contributed to transforming the country into a prominent artistic center that attracts global energies.
The six episodes, which are available to the public via the foundation’s website and various podcast platforms, review the path of local art through exclusive interviews with pioneers, founders, and critics. It begins by discussing the main themes, then monitors the flow of personnel and technologies in the 1960s, and the experiences of artists sent abroad in the 1970s, leading to the flourishing of the artistic scene and the emergence of experimental practices and independent initiatives in the 1980s, concluding its work with a comprehensive dialogue about the shift from cross-border internationalism to artistic globalization.
