Egypt announces the discovery of two cemeteries from the ancient era in the Jabal al-Tair area in Minya Governorate

Cairo, June 20 / WAM / The Egyptian archaeological mission affiliated with the Supreme Council of Antiquities announced the discovery of two cemeteries dating back to the ancient era, in addition to a number of burials dating back to the pre-dynastic and late eras, in the Jabal al-Tair area in the Samalut center in Minya Governorate.

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said in a statement today that the first cemetery is considered one of the rare architectural discoveries, as it is distinguished by a unique geometric design, while the second cemetery represents a similar model, noting that there is a noticeable similarity between the design of the two cemeteries and the design of the famous King Den cemetery in Abydos, which confirms the importance of the region as one of the cemeteries that were used over extended periods of time from the pre-dynastic eras until the late era.

The Ministry explained that the design of the first tomb was based on the gradual thickness of the walls from bottom to top, an architectural style that may represent an early stage in the development of engineering thought, which later led to the emergence of the Step Pyramid and then the Complete Pyramid.

She added that the second cemetery is located to the south of the first cemetery and is largely identical to it in architectural design, except that it was not subjected to petrification works, which contributed to the better preservation of its elements.

The mission also found a number of individual and group human burials that are likely to date to the Late Period, confirming the continued use of the area as a cemetery throughout successive historical eras.
