The 45th session of the Sharjah International Book Fair begins on November 4

Sharjah, 7 July / WAM / The Sharjah Book Authority announced the date of organizing the forty-fifth session of the Sharjah International Book Fair, which brings together readers, writers, publishers, translators and knowledge makers from around the world, during the period from 4 to 15 next November at the Sharjah Expo Centre.

This year’s session constitutes a new station in the exhibition’s journey, which has established itself as an annual forum for the book, culture and publishing industry, as its integrated programs combine attendance of publishing houses, literary and intellectual meetings, activities directed at children and adolescents, and specialized professional paths.

Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Sharjah Book Authority, confirmed that the Sharjah International Book Fair reflects the relationship that Sharjah has built with books over decades, through which it made reading a part of the lives of families, children and youth, noting that the exhibition has, for more than 45 years, consolidated the book in the life of society and opened Arab culture a broader scope for dialogue with the world.

Her Highness said that each session of the exhibition carries a new responsibility towards the reader, writer and publisher, as the direct relationship between the person and the book is what creates the positive cultural impact and gives the exhibition its value in society, pointing out that the exhibition allows cultures to present their literature and ideas in their different languages and experiences, and gives the public an opportunity to get to know them through their writers and creators, and at the same time, it expands the scope for Arabic literature to be present in an equal dialogue with the world, and brings it closer to new readers.

For his part, His Excellency Ahmed bin Rakad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, said that the Sharjah International Book Fair is considered one of Sharjah’s projects that most expresses the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, towards achieving development and advancement of societies through investment in knowledge. It celebrates the book as a civilized project, and gives all actors in the knowledge industry a global platform for communication, work and cooperation, starting with readers, through to writers and publishers. It succeeded in changing societies’ perception of book fairs, and it became an event that brings together all forms of communication and knowledge, and a model of the status and presence of Arab culture worldwide.

He added that under the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Sharjah Book Authority, the exhibition continues to develop its programs and expand its international presence, and celebrates the cultures of the world on the land of Sharjah, especially through the Guest of Honor programme, which has become an integrated path to introduce the culture of a particular country, through its literature, arts and intellectual history, thus opening broader areas of communication between institutions and creators, and giving the public a deeper knowledge of the participating cultural experiences.

The Sultanate of Oman is the guest of honor for the forty-fifth session of the exhibition, in a participation aimed at highlighting its cultural heritage and its cultural, literary and artistic scene, and introducing the exhibition audience to the contributions of its writers, thinkers and creators.

The Omani presence adds to the session a Gulf and Arab space that enhances cultural exchange and allows direct meetings between the audience and an elite group of literary and intellectual voices in the Sultanate.

The cultural and professional program of the exhibition includes meetings with writers and thinkers, dialogue sessions, book signing parties, poetry evenings, cognitive and creative workshops, and programs dedicated to children and adolescents, in addition to activities that address those working in the publishing, translation and library sectors.

This diversity gives visitors multiple paths to purchase books and meet their authors, in addition to attending discussions and acquiring new skills and knowledge.
