The European Union Council approves the updated trade agreement with Mexico

Brussels, July 14, 2026 – The European Union Council finally approved the updated temporary trade agreement with Mexico, after it was signed on May 22, 2026 and approved by the European Parliament on July 8, paving the way for its entry into force immediately upon completion of Mexican procedures.

The agreement updates the trade pillar within the comprehensive agreement between the two sides, while improving access to markets by canceling most customs duties, expanding investment opportunities, services and public procurement, in addition to enhancing the protection of European geographical indications and developing cooperation in digital trade and vital raw materials.

It is expected that more than 45,000 European companies, the majority of which are small and medium-sized companies, will benefit from the new facilities, at a time when bilateral trade exchanges amount to about 87 billion euros in goods, and 29 billion euros in services.
