80% of new Ebola infections are of unknown origin

The World Health Organization announced that 80% of new infections with the Ebola virus in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo result from unknown chains of transmission, indicating that the disease is spreading at a faster rate than the ability of health authorities to track it, despite intensified response efforts. Government data showed that the number of confirmed cases of Ebola virus infection in the Democratic Republic of the Congo rose to 2,011, including 754 deaths. The country’s Public Health Institute said, in its latest report, that 54 new infections were recorded last Monday in Three provinces, including Ituri and North Kivu, and Congo have been battling the outbreak of the Ebola virus, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, since May 15.
