Fire besieges southern Europe. Fires devour forests and homes
Caught many Fires in different parts of Southern Europe on Wednesday, especially around Madrid in Spain, and in the regions of Calabria and Sicily in Italy, and in Provence and the Bordeaux region in A huge fire in homes, and emergency alerts were sent via phones to residents of the areas warning of the fire.
The new fire continues, while hundreds of firefighters fight another massive fire that has destroyed a vast area located about 100 kilometers north of Madrid.
The speed of the spread of fires
Many fires have broken out in Spain over the past few days, and these forest fires are spreading rapidly, driven by the heat wave that has been suffocating the country for two days.
The largest fire is raging in the region. Opposite Madrid, specifically in the province of Guadalajara, about 100 kilometers north of the capital, it has destroyed 32,000 hectares since last Thursday.
A massive fire destroyed about 15,000 hectares last week in the province of Zaragoza (northeast), while another fire claimed the lives of 13 people a few days before that in the province of Almeria (southeast).
Dozens of fires in Italy
In southern Italy, dozens of fires are burning in forests and areas. Forests on the island of Sicily were blown by hot winds, and Interior Minister Matteo Piantidosi announced that an Italian firefighter was killed on Wednesday while fighting the flames.
More than 160 fires were also recorded during the past 24 hours in neighboring Calabria.
In France, on Wednesday, firefighters battled two major fires, one of them in the Gironde department (southwest), where a large fire swept more than 1,000 hectares north of the Arcachon basin and is still continuing. It expanded, and the other was in the Var province (southeast), where the fire stopped expanding after it burned 2,500 hectares.
The fires forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes as a precaution.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez explained that more than 12,500 fires had broken out since the beginning of the year, during which 44,000 hectares were burned, an area larger than what was recorded in 2022 when the fires swept through the southwest of the country.
