"Sharjah Arts" Launches a series of science fiction films about space
Sharjah, July 23 / WAM / The Sharjah Arts Foundation is organizing the second series of the “Sunday Cinema Club” program, under the title “Lunar Visions: Science Fiction Films in the Space Age,” at the Photography Gallery in the Al Manakh District in Sharjah, during the period from July 26 to August 9.
The series includes three films that review the development of science fiction cinema and man’s relationship with space across different time periods: “A Space Odyssey – 1936” by director Vasiliy Zhuravlyov, “A Trip to the Moon – 1959” by director Hamada Abdel Wahab, and “A Space Odyssey: 1968-2001” by director Stanley Kubrick.
The program highlights the development of cinematic treatments of space topics, from early experiments that relied on traditional visual effects, all the way to works that dealt with issues of technology, artificial intelligence, and the future of humanity, reflecting the role of cinema in anticipating the prospects of space exploration.
The series opens on July 26 with the screening of the film “A Space Journey,” followed by a dialogue with planetary scientist Dr. Noura Al-Saeed about the motives for space exploration and man’s relationship with the universe.
On August 2, the Egyptian film “A Trip to the Moon” will be screened, followed by a dialogue with Dr. Mohamed Mamdouh, Assistant Professor of Cinema and New Media at the American University of Sharjah, about the film’s place in the history of Egyptian cinema, and the use of science fiction in addressing scientific and technological issues.
The series concludes on August 9 with the screening of the film “A Space Odyssey: 2001,” followed by a dialogue with Dr. Bentley Brown, director and assistant professor at the American University of Sharjah, addressing the philosophical dimensions of the film and its relationship to issues of artificial intelligence and the future of man.
This series is organized within the “Sunday Cinema Club” program presented by the Sharjah Arts Foundation, with the aim of promoting dialogue about the history of cinema and its intersections with culture, arts and sciences.
