We have spotted Chinese military ships and aircraft in the past hours
The Taiwanese army is preparing for possible exercises by China, in response to a recent foreign trip undertaken by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, which included Hawaii and Guam, two territories belonging to the United States.
Training and maneuvers
Taiwanese Lieutenant General Hsieh Jie-shing said that without any announcement from China, Taiwanese officials describe what is happening as exercises, indicating that the exercises could turn into maneuvers, and that the maneuvers could turn into war. Taiwan and China separated in 1949 during a civil war.
But China’s long-ruling Communist Party says autonomous Taiwan is part of China and must come under its control at some point.
Diplomatic relations
During the Taiwanese president’s trip in the Pacific region, he stopped in the US territories Hawaii and Guam. He also visited the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau, three of the 12 countries that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
The rest of the world, including the United States, has official relations with China.
