Continuing investigations.. “Chemical Weapons Prohibition” discusses the situation in Syria

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons began an emergency meeting today, Thursday, to discuss the situation in Syria against the backdrop of concern about the country’s stock of toxic chemicals after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
Last Monday, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons informed Syria that it was obligated to comply with rules for protecting and destroying dangerous materials, such as chlorine gas, after the rebels entered the capital, Damascus, at the weekend.

Ongoing investigations

“Chemical weapons have been used in Syria on multiple occasions, and the victims deserve for the perpetrators we have identified to be brought to justice, held accountable for what they have done, and for investigations to continue,” Fernando Arias Gonzalez, Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said in his opening remarks.
He explained, “Our reports over the past few years have reached very clear conclusions, and we hope that the new circumstances in Syria will allow this chapter to be closed soon,” noting that the stockpiles and the use of the weapons themselves have not been announced.
The government of Bashar al-Assad denied using chemical weapons, but the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons found evidence indicating the repeated use of these weapons by Syria in the brutal civil war.
