“Definitely hundreds” died in Typhoon Shido

Local authorities in the French archipelago of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean said on Sunday that the death toll from the devastation caused by Hurricane Shido would reach “definitely hundreds” and perhaps “a few thousand.”

The governor of the archipelago, François-Xavier Beauville, told the Mayotte La Premiere television channel, “I think there will certainly be hundreds, and perhaps we are approaching a thousand or even several thousand” deaths, after the hurricane largely destroyed the slums in which about a third of the archipelago’s population lives, as well as About cutting off electricity, water and communications.
