Report: Egypt leads North African countries in clean energy projects

A specialized report identified the most important renewable energy and green hydrogen projects in North Africa, while two projects emerged from Egypt; This list also included Algeria and Morocco.
The report prepared by the “Energy Capital and Power” platform stated: A leader in energy investment in Africa, thanks to its richness in a variety of energy sources from oil and gas to renewable energy; The North African region is accelerating the development of energy projects to meet growing demand, boost exports and drive sustainable economic growth, adding that the recent developments of energy projects for these countries highlight the feasibility of large-scale investments in the region while demonstrating its potential to become a major energy hub and change the energy landscape in North Africa.
According to the report, Egypt is at the forefront of the renewable energy scene in northern Africa, through huge projects, the forefront of which is the wind power station in the Gulf of Suez, which contains 70 wind turbines, representing 252 wind turbines. A megawatt of electrical power in the Gulf of Suez, about 25 km south of Ras Gharib; It contributes annually to providing 1,200 gigawatt hours of green electricity and 400,000 families with electrical energy, thus saving 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, and the cost of its implementation amounted to 1.1 billion dollars.
The station provides energy to 11 million homes and works on Reducing carbon emissions by 25.5 million tons annually. The project will also achieve huge savings amounting to $6.5 billion in annual gas costs, and provide about 120,000 jobs. a job . This project helps Egypt approach its goal of generating 42% of its energy from renewable sources by 2035. The project also strengthens North Africa’s position as a global producer of wind energy.
The second Egyptian project, the Western Sahara Gas Complex, under which A gas processing facility with a capacity of 600 thousand million cubic feet per day was established to ensure a stable supply of liquefied natural gas for local needs and its derivatives for the petrochemical industries.
In Algeria, the report stated, is transforming its hydrocarbon industry through the “Hassi R’Mel” field expansion project, which is the largest gas field in the country, where the “Sonatrach” company launched National Oil Company, the third phase of the project, in December 2024. The $2.3 billion project includes the construction of gas compression stations and mercury removal units, the renewal of gas collection networks, and the installation of new processing units.
The project is expected to boost gas production by 2027, enhancing Algeria’s role as a major gas supplier. To Europe, making North Africa the third largest exporter of gas to the continent.
The report also referred to Morocco’s plans to accelerate energy projects, pointing to the “X-Links” project. Which received financing worth $14.1 million from the African Finance Corporation.
Total Energy invested in $25 million to accelerate the project through the acquisition of a stake in gigawatts, and a 4,000 km long submarine cable to transport electricity to the United Kingdom.
In addition to meeting Morocco’s domestic energy needs, the project will provide 8% of UK electricity needs; Which supplies 7 million British homes with energy.
With regard to green hydrogen projects; The report confirmed that North Africa stands out as a promising global center for producing this clean energy, as it attracts many major projects that have made it a major destination for international investors in the renewable energy sector.
