المملكة: Strengthening the infrastructure… modern technologies that enhance the efficiency of the road network in the Kingdom

During the year 2024, the General Authority for Roads adopted a set of modern technologies that contribute to raising the level of safety and efficiency on the road network, in a step that reflects its commitment to strengthening the road infrastructure in the Kingdom.
Among the modern technologies adopted by the Roads Authority is the on-site asphalt recycling (FDR) equipment, which works to recycle the entire layers of asphalt and what is underneath it directly on site, which contributes to reducing costs by between 40% and 70% compared to traditional methods. .
It also allows traffic to be restored on the same day, which reduces traffic disruption and contributes to reducing carbon emissions by a large percentage, as part of the authority’s commitment to achieving environmental sustainability.

Asphalt recycling

In addition, the Authority adopts the technology of recycling old asphalt into new asphalt mixtures, which contributes to reducing the need to use new raw materials and reducing emissions resulting from transportation and extraction operations, forming part of the Authority’s efforts to adopt sustainable solutions that preserve the environment and enhance the efficiency of use. Resources.
In the context of expanding the use of modern technologies, the General Authority of Roads owns a huge survey and evaluation fleet that is considered the largest in the world, and relies heavily on artificial intelligence, as it includes advanced equipment such as a device for scanning damage on road surfaces, a device for measuring slip resistance, and a device for measuring deviation in… Road layers, in addition to equipment to measure the global roughness factor and road thickness. These technologies allow the Authority to analyze and monitor observations accurately, which contributes to improving the quality of maintenance and making appropriate decisions at the right time.

Roads in the Kingdom

Among other technologies adopted by the Authority, the ground paint measuring device is used for the first time in the Middle East, and it features a high-resolution camera and GPS, which allows the location of every measured point to be determined with high accuracy. The device operates at a speed of up to 80 km/h. An hour, it also measures the reflective strength of ground paints, providing a comprehensive database that helps improve maintenance operations and reduce costs.
The Roads Authority also used drone technology to inspect and evaluate roads, as this technology allows access to difficult places such as ferries and obstacles and conduct thermal scanning, which contributes to ensuring the level of cleanliness on the right of way and implementing inspection procedures automatically and effectively.

The latest technology in maintenance

The use of modern technologies comes within the framework of performance-based maintenance contracts adopted by the authority, which aims to use the latest technologies in maintenance work to raise the road quality index in the Kingdom to the sixth level, and reduce the number of deaths to less than 5 cases per 100,000 people by 2030.
The Roads Authority continues to expand the use of the latest technologies and equipment to achieve its strategy that focuses on safety, quality and traffic density, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics center and achieve the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, by improving the experience of road users and ensuring high levels of safety and efficiency in the sector.
