المملكة: Saving a sick foot from amputation after 3 years of suffering in Buraidah

Foot surgeons at the Sheikh Fahd Al-Awaidah Diabetic Foot Centre, one of the components of the Qassim Health Cluster, saved the foot of a patient who was suffering from a rare medical condition known as “Charcot foot”, in addition to a chronic ankle dislocation that lasted for three years, and excessive obesity that caused her inability to walk. .

The Qassim Health Council explained that the patient, aged 41 years, came to the center from outside the Qassim region after previous recommendations to amputate her foot below the knee due to the complexity of her condition due to her suffering from “Charcot foot”, a condition that affects diabetics and leads to nerve deterioration and weak bones and joints. .

Treatment plan to save the foot

The group reported that, after conducting careful examinations and the necessary x-rays, the medical team decided to develop a treatment plan that would preserve the foot without the need for amputation. The plan included performing a gastric sleeve procedure for the patient to improve wound healing and reduce excess weight, in addition to performing another surgery that took five hours to clean the affected bones and stabilize the ankle using a bone graft and a “Lizarov device” for external fixation.

The association confirmed that both operations were completed successfully – praise be to God – and the patient was transferred to the team specialized in physical therapy and rehabilitation to help gradually restore the ability to walk. He pointed out that the patient was discharged from the center in good health, with follow-up in the clinic.

The medical team, consisting of foot and ankle surgery consultants: Dr. Hani Badahdah and Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Saqabi, participated in performing the operation, with the participation of Dr. Nadeem Sheikh, and diabetic foot surgery specialist Dr. Badr Al-Harbi.
