Suhail Al Mazrouei: New legislation and policies enhance the sustainability of hydrogen production

Abu Dhabi, January 16 / WAM / His Excellency Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said that the Ministry is currently working, in cooperation with its partners in the International Hydrogen Partnership coalition, which represents legislators, on developing new legislation and policies suitable for all countries, which the coalition will adopt and apply in the UAE, in a way that contributes to In enhancing the sustainability of hydrogen production as it represents the fuel of the future.
His Excellency added, in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, on the sidelines of the activities of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, that work on the legislative side in cooperation with the International Hydrogen Partnership Alliance contributes to setting a roadmap and clear standards for the sustainability of the hydrogen sector in the future, noting the UAE’s strong presence in the Council Hydrogen, which represents companies through the companies “ADNOC” and “Masdar”.
His Excellency Suhail Al Mazrouei said: We are working with partners around the world to develop sustainable and supportive legislation for the hydrogen sector, noting that the UAE has launched a road map targeting the production of 1.4 million metric tons of low-carbon hydrogen annually by 2031, and this map needs legislation and policies in terms of production, transportation, etc. It contributes to achieving the goal of the UAE becoming a global producer and exporter of low-carbon hydrogen energy.
His Excellency explained that the cost of hydrogen production has decreased by between 40% and 50%, from $10 per kilogram to between $5-6 per kilogram currently, which contributes to the sustainability of the hydrogen sector and enhances production processes.
His Excellency stressed that Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week constitutes a global platform that brings together leaders, experts, and the most important minds from around the world under one umbrella, which in turn contributed to strengthening Abu Dhabi’s global leadership position in anticipating and shaping the future of the global energy sector.
His Excellency pointed out the inauguration of the largest and first project of its kind in the world that combines solar energy and energy storage batteries in Abu Dhabi, which will provide renewable energy 24 hours a day and contribute to providing about “1 gigawatt per day” of the base load of renewable energy, forming the largest solar energy station equipped with Battery systems for energy storage worldwide.
His Excellency said that the project includes a photovoltaic solar energy station with a capacity of 5 gigawatts (direct current), in addition to battery systems for energy storage with a capacity of 19 gigawatts/hour, to establish a new global standard in clean energy innovations and constitute an important breakthrough in the global energy sector.
