Britain expresses its readiness to conclude a trade agreement with America

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his country’s readiness to conclude a trade agreement with the United States, he told two newspapers on Friday.
These British statements come two days before Donald Trump’s inauguration as president.

It has sought to conclude a transatlantic free trade agreement since its official exit from the European Union in 2021.
But the negotiations collapsed, one of the reasons for this was the reluctance to open its borders to some American agricultural products.
Starmer, who leads the Labor Party, told the Financial Times, “Our ambition is to reach some agreement with the United States, a trade agreement. That is our focus.”

Negotiations between the United States and Britain made progress during Trump’s first presidency, but slowed under Joe Biden.
The start of new talks may allow Britain to break away from Trump’s pledge to impose tariffs ranging between 10 and 20% on all products entering the United States.
“The inauguration hasn’t happened yet, so let’s see what the decisions are when we get to that stage,” Starmer told Politico on Friday.

He continued, “I have been clear that we would like to have discussions about a trade agreement with the United States.”
Stephen Moore, one of Trump’s most senior economic advisers, stressed to the BBC in November that the UK should fall in line with the US “free enterprise” economic model.
He pointed out that “this would stimulate the Trump administration’s desire to conclude a free trade agreement with the United Kingdom.”
