China expands the use of coal energy despite international warnings

Fears of increased use of coal
This development raises concerns about the ability of the largest source of carbon dioxide in the world to achieve its climatic goals and threatens to undermine the tremendous expansion of China in solar energy and wind energy, which has much outweighed the expansion of the United States and Europe, according to the report.
The report is part of a review of coal projects in China that takes place every six months by the United States -based Energy Control Organization.

China is likely to have begun to build a 94.5 GB of coal power station in 2024, which has surpassed several years since 2015, according to a global database of coal stations at Global Inryji Monitor.
The report stated that the work was also resumed in 3.3 GB of suspended projects.
New coal stations
The organization added that “a large number of new stations will enter service during the next two or three years, which enhances the role of coal in the energy system.”

The report stated that in the last three months of 2024, electricity from fossil fuels remained high, while the use of solar energy and wind energy decreased sharply.
“The new trend was expected in the wake of the increase in government approvals to build coal stations between 2022 and 2023,” said Chi Chen, a Chinese analyst on energy issues.
Climate demands to China
The report added: “We urge China to refrain from starting to build coal stations that have been approved to prevent more surplus energy, reduce emissions and compatible with its climatic obligations.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced two climatic goals in 2020, namely reaching the peak of carbon emissions by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060.
The challenge of reducing harmful emissions
Analysts say that carbon emissions in the country may have already reached their climax and that the next challenge is to start lowering them.
Not adhering to reducing emissions
China is among the many countries that missed the deadline set by the United Nations last week to present a national plan to reduce emissions by 2035.
“The government is working to prepare a plan and will provide it in a timely manner this year 2025,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qouh Jia Kun.
The largest coal user in the world
The report stated that China acquired 93% of coal use and the creation of coal power stations worldwide last year.
The report said that the proposals for new coal power stations projects in China decreased last year to 68.9 GW of more than 100 GW in the previous two years, indicating that the start of construction despite its expansion compared to the above may slow down. The new coal capacity approved in China also decreased to 66.7 GW after the sharp rise in 2022-2023.
