Britain freezes government credit cards in a campaign to reduce spending

The British government said that thousands of credit cards issued and represent hundreds of millions of pounds from spending will be frozen this week, in an attempt to reform the exhausted public money.

The Cabinet Office said in a statement released late Monday that the decision to freeze nearly 20 thousand “government purchasing cards” comes within the framework of efforts to reduce excessive spending.

The Cabinet Office indicates that spending on government credit cards has doubled more than four times since the fiscal year 2020 – 2021 to more than 675 million pounds (876.83 million dollars) in 2024 – 2025 after it was about 155 million.

Only a few employees will be excluded from this decision, and the procedure aims to reduce the number of cards circulating by at least 50%.
