المملكة: “Kax” continues its pioneering role in supporting the Saudi Green Initiative
King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology “Kax” continues its pioneering role in supporting the Saudi Green Initiative by implementing innovative projects and ambitious initiatives that effectively contribute to achieving the Kingdom’s environmental goals and enhancing its sustainability.
These initiatives come within the efforts of the National Laboratory in finding innovative environmentally friendly solutions, protecting land and sea areas, enhancing biological diversity and improving environmental sustainability in order to achieve national aspirations for research, development and innovation.
Vegetable cover surveys
“Kax” worked on the project of vegetable cover surveys as one of its initiatives to preserve the vegetation and biological diversity, which is concerned with wiping and evaluating the vegetation in the Kingdom, collecting samples of soil, plants and seeds, and its chemically and physically analyzed.
During the project, 8 new types of plants were recorded on the Saudi Flura site, and 600 sites were wiped with an area of square kilometer per site, which contributes to preserving the local vegetation.
The printing of the atlas of the Kingdom’s plants, which includes 500 plant species, is also being prepared, which is a scientific reference for researchers and those interested in this field.
Converting waste into energy
To support national initiatives, “Kax” succeeded in building a model using infrared surveys to maintain irrigation water and tree health, sustain them by up to 8%, promote public health, and reduce energy use in urban planning areas.
“Kax” also implemented a project to convert waste to energy, and reduce the amount of waste that is buried, in order to achieve the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative, to increase afforestation and land reclamation work and the cultivation of one billion trees by 2030.
Desalination plant
Based on its role in localizing renewable energy techniques to produce desalinated water, “Kax” created the absorption desalination plant in Rabigh Governorate, which works with solar energy, to take advantage of the brine and convert it into added products, which enhances the sustainability of the marine environment.
“Kax” has also developed micro -bubble techniques for water treatment, contributing to providing high -quality water for vegetative agriculture and reducing the need for electrical stations by 15%, which is an important step towards improving the efficiency of water use in the Kingdom.

For hydrogen production, “Kax” develops plasma technology to produce low -carbon hydrogen, which is more efficient in energy use of up to 3 times compared to traditional methods.
Promote biological diversity
In the context of strengthening biological diversity, “Kax” continues to study the environmental impact of the cultivation of mangroves in the Kingdom, which stored carbon in the long run.
These projects embody the commitment of the National Laboratory to support the targets of the Kingdom’s 2030 vision, and national initiatives to achieve a healthy and sustainable environment for future generations.
