The death toll from the Myanmar earthquake to 1644

On Saturday, the parallel national government in Myanmar, which coordinates the popular struggle against the ruling military regime, announced on Saturday a partial truce to facilitate relief efforts from the traces of the earthquake, with the death toll from the country due to the disaster to 1644 people.

This number is a significant increase in the death toll compared to the death toll of 1002, which was announced just a few hours ago, highlighting the difficulty of confirming the number of victims in a wide area and the possibility of continuing to increase the numbers after the earthquake, which reached 7.7 degrees on the Richter scale on Friday. The number of injured people increased to 3408, while the number of missing persons increased to 139.

In the neighboring Thailand, the death toll rose to 17. The earthquake shook the Greater Bangkok region, which is inhabited by about 17 million people, and other parts of the country. Countries were reported in many places in the north, but the injuries were limited to Bangkok.

Among the dead are 10 people who died in a tall building near the famous Chatwsha market that collapsed, while the rest were killed in seven other sites. The Bangkok authorities said that 83 people were still missing.
On Saturday, more heavy equipment was brought to raise the rubble, but the hopes of finding neighborhoods under the rubble began to fade between friends and families.

The rescue efforts so far in Myanmar are focused on the affected major cities such as Mandilaay, the second city in the country, and the capital, Naibidao.

But despite the arrival of rescue teams and equipment from other countries, these efforts are hindered by the damage to the airports. Satellite photos from “Plan BBC”, which was analyzed by the Associated Press, showed that the earthquake destroyed the air traffic control tower at Naibidao International Airport as if it had been uprooted from its base.

It was not immediately clear whether there were any injuries as a result of the collapse of the tower.
