Dubai Municipality has completed 36% of the development of the rain drainage system in the Deira region

Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, accompanied by a number of executive, administrative and engineering leaders, conducted a field tour of the project to develop the infrastructure for the rainwater drainage system in the Deira region, which has a total cost of 500 million dirhams and serves 13 vital areas with an area of 4,700 hectares by developing rainwater networks with a length of 60 kilometers. The implementation rate of the first phase of the project reached 36%, with a timetable for completion by the end of the year. 2027, thus constituting a qualitative addition that enhances the efficiency of the rainwater drainage system in the emirate.
During the tour, he was briefed on the scope and objectives of the project, developments in the progress of work, and follow-up of progress in the areas it covers, which include; Al Qusais 1 and 2, Oud Al Muteena, Mizhar 3, Al Twar 1 and 3, Muhaisnah 4, Al Nahda 2, Al Qusais Industrial 1, Al Garhoud, Casablanca Road, Dubai Airport District, and Al Rashidiya, where all works are carried out according to advanced engineering techniques that ensure efficient implementation, maintain the comfort of residents, and support the continuity of business and commercial activities.
Flexible engineering solutions
As part of the work of the first phase out of 3 main phases of the project, water drainage networks with a length of 22 kilometers, with diameters of up to 2.5 metres, were implemented and developed, in addition to a new pumping station near Dubai Creek with a capacity of up to 8,000 litres/second, which supports the efficiency and effectiveness of the rainwater system in the region.
The project is one of the most important projects being implemented during the first phase of the “Tasrif” program to develop the rainwater drainage network in Dubai. It is the largest program for collecting rainwater in one system in the region, and the most efficient and most flexible, at a cost of up to 30 billion dirhams. The program aims to improve the infrastructure capabilities of the drainage system, enhance the absorptive capacity by 700%, while reducing the costs associated with establishing stations, operations and maintenance by 20%, and increasing the lifespan of the network, thus consolidating the emirate’s leadership among the world’s most advanced and flexible cities in its infrastructure.
More ready and sustainable infrastructure
His Excellency Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said: “Dubai Municipality continues to implement the Tasrif program project package to develop the rainwater drainage network in Dubai, which represents the backbone of our projects to enhance the efficiency of the strategic infrastructure in the emirate, and make it more sustainable, developed and adaptive to various future climate variables, according to innovative and proactive engineering solutions that reflect Dubai’s approach to building a model of flexible future cities. We are committed to making Dubai a pioneering city, more prepared and with a better quality of life in every task and project.” We accomplish it according to international standards that preserve the safety of its residents and visitors, improve their quality of life, and support the growth of their businesses and projects within the best city to live and work in the world.”
Flexible and sustainable solutions
For his part, Engineer Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Sanitation Corporation in Dubai Municipality, said: “Through the project to develop the rainwater drainage system in Deira and related areas, we focus on enhancing the operational efficiency of the drainage networks, by implementing flexible engineering solutions in accordance with the latest international standards and practices, so that they enhance the carrying capacity, reduce the risks of water accumulation, and raise the efficiency and sustainability of the infrastructure, in addition to improving the level of services provided to the residents of the region, in a way that supports sustainable development paths and preserves “…ensures the continuity of business and commercial activities in one of the most important vital areas within the Emirate of Dubai.”
Dubai Municipality works to manage rainwater and sewage drainage networks, according to a smart and comprehensive planning and operational vision that keeps pace with the latest standards and practices of smart city management.
It also continues its efforts to develop a flexible infrastructure for rainwater drainage within the “Tareef” program, according to engineering solutions and smart and innovative technologies that enhance dealing with rainwater and surface water flows, and preserve the safety of residents and property within a sustainable and advanced urban environment, supporting urban development plans.
