New investigations from the Trump administration paved the way for the imposition of fees on medicines and chips

21 days to make comments
Documentation, which is expected to be published on Wednesday, shows that the administration has given a deadline not exceeding 21 days to receive public comments on this procedure, indicating a clear intention to impose customs duties under the 1962 trade expansion law. The law requires the completion of investigations within 270 days from the date of its launch.
Previous investigations paved the new fees
During its first term, the Trump administration launched 232 investigations at the imports of several sectors that included copper and wood, and these investigations were the basis for imposing customs duties on steel, aluminum and car industry since Trump returned to the White House last January.
On April 5, the US administration started applying 10% fees to imports, with a temporary exemption for both medicines and semi -conductors. However, Trump later stated that separate fees will be imposed on these products later.

An anticipated announcement on the chips
President Trump said on Sunday that he will be announced soon for the average customs duties on semiconductors, noting the possibility of providing flexibility to some companies operating in this sector to avoid disrupting supply chains.
A great American dependence on Taiwan chips
The United States relies heavily on importing electronic chips from Taiwan, a pressure point that Trump is seeking to deal with by imposing new fees. His predecessor Joe Biden tried to reduce this accreditation by providing billions of dollars in incentives to attract chips companies to expand production inside the country.
For his part, the Taiwanese Minister of Economy Qi -Hui stated that Taiwan will take place for the impact of customs duties and will seek to negotiate with the United States.

The pharmaceutical industry warns of the lack of medicine
Pharmaceutical companies have expressed concern about the impact of the new fees, noting that they may cause a lack of medicines and the complexity of patients’ access to treatments.
However, Trump continues to pressure towards the local manufacturing of medicines, considering that dependence on the outside in this sector is a threat to national security.
Calls to transfer production to America
The major pharmaceutical companies are pressing the American administration to apply a gradual customs duties, which give them enough time to resettle manufacturing within the country.
Although these companies have a global spread in the United States, Europe and Asia, the transfer of production to the American interior requires huge investments and may take several years to actually apply it.
