The White House praises the progress of talks on a trade agreement with China

The White House announced that the talks between the United States and China on a possible trade agreement have made progress, despite the customs duties policy pursued by President Donald Trump and the response measures taken by Beijing.
So far, the Chinese government has not confirmed these talks, although it had called for several times to conduct a dialogue based on equal conditions.

“We are achieving very good results regarding a possible commercial agreement with China, as the president and the administration pave the way for an agreement,” White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitte told reporters on Tuesday.

She emphasized that “all parties hope to reach a trade agreement, and things are going in the right direction.”

A fierce commercial war

The United States and China are facing as part of a fierce trade war that caught several weeks ago.

Since his return to the White House in January, President Donald Trump has imposed customs duties of 145% on many Chinese products, bringing total taxes to 245% on some commodities.
Beijing responded by imposing taxes at a rate of 125%, confirming that it will continue this commercial confrontation until the end.

For other countries, mutual customs duties, which exceeded 10% for 90 days, were suspended, while the White House opened the door to negotiation.

18 suggestions

Caroline Levitte said that significant progress was made in this field, noting that the United States has received 18 proposals for agreements by customs duties.

She added that 34 meetings with different countries this week are scheduled, in order to hold negotiations.

Last week, the Amiri President announced that there are ongoing talks with China.

“I think we will reach a very good agreement,” he told reporters at the White House.
