Global Health recognizes its great impact from reducing US financing

The Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanum Gybrisus, acknowledged that the US financing reduced left the United Nations agency with a huge budget gap, forcing it to reduce its operations and lay off employees.
“The sudden reduction in income left us a big gap in salaries, and he left us with no choice but to reduce the scope of our work and our working strength.”

Trump refuses to pay membership fees

The World Health Organization is preparing to withdraw the United States, which has been the largest of it so far, next January.
In addition, the administration of US President Donald Trump refused to pay the agreed membership fees for the year 2024 and 2025, with its almost completely freezing US foreign aid, including huge assistance to health projects all over the world.
Also, a number of other countries have reduced their spending on external aid.

New organizational structure

In the face of this situation, the World Health Organization began thinking about a new organizational structure presented by Tedros to employees and member states on Tuesday.
He admitted that “the United States’s refusal to pay its scheduled contributions to 2024 and 2025, in addition to reducing official development aid by some other countries, means that we are facing a salary gap for the period 2026-2027 ranging between 560 and 650 million dollars.”
He added that the minimum of this “represents about 25% of the employees currently, but he stressed that this does not necessarily mean that the number of jobs is reduced by 25%.

Employment of employees

The Director General of the World Health Organization did not specify the number of employees who will be demobilized, but he said that the greatest impact will be at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva and “we will start from senior management.”
He continued: “We will reduce the high command team at the headquarters from 12 to 7, and the number of sections will reduce more than half, from 76 to 34.
“It is very painful decisions for all of us.”
